Our Namesake

Allan Troup was born in Fort Erie on September 17, 1908 and lived at 55 Niagara Boulevard. He was the son of William and Isabella Troup and the brother of Harvey. He attended Douglas Street Public School and graduated from Fort Erie High School. Allan was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and also of the Boy Scouts. In the fall of 1930 Allan enrolled in the University of Toronto to study mechanical engineering. After two years, in the spring of 1932 he dropped out, a fatality of the depression. Allan then worked for Canada Customs.

He enlisted on June 24, 1940 at Niagara Falls. After training as an Observer (bomb aimer and navigator) he received his wings and was posted in England. He was attached to RAF Squadron 22 as an observer on a Beaufort Torpedo Plane. On December 12, 1941 while on a bombing raid targeting an oil refinery at Donges, France, their aircraft took a direct hit in the front section and Allan was killed. The aircraft crashed and the surviving three crew members were taken prisoner of war.
